Art, Music, Language Teachers -
Next fall the KIS Habitat for Humanity group is traveling with four other East Asian schools to volunteer building homes. This is the first time we are collaborating with other schools and we feel this is a chance to make a huge impact in an area of the world and a great experience for our students.
To accomplish this goal, the KIS Habitat club is plan a big fundraiser for fall. The idea that the students came up with is a "Habitat Concert" with student/teachers performances, art work, etc. Every dime raised will go straight to a needy Habitat affiliate (it is not funding the cost of student travel). Here's where we are hoping to get the Art, Music and Language departments involved:
1. Planning the date - can you email me dates of concerts or other events already going on in fall so we can avoid double booking?
2. Music Performances - the students are hoping that music teachers will encourage music students to participate in the concert. We are looking for volunteeers to do short performances with smaller ensembles or individual, but if the whole band/orchestra/choir would like to perform some numbers, that would be great also! We also think it would be motivating if there was also teachers performing/interacting in some way. Any ideas?
3. Theatre/Cultural Performances - Because Habitat is an international effort all over the world, the students also thought it would be great if theatre, chinese, french, spanish, korean, etc students put together performances for the concert also. These could be based on cultural music, dance, play, or other. Any ideas?
4. Art work - Another great idea that was proposed was to have a silent auction of artwork the night of the concert where the proceeds would go to Habitat. I've done this in the past with pottery and it worked out fantastically well. If art students/teachers were willing to donate their artwork to this cause it could really make a difference. The artwork could be inspired by Habitat-related issues (poverty, housing, etc) or it could be completely unrelated. Photos, murals, paintings, pottery, etc. Any ideas?
This event is entirely student driven and they are really hoping for your ideas, advice, and collaboration to make this successful. We are hoping this will become a annual event!
The official "sign-up" for slots in the concert will be in August, but please email/talk to me about your ideas and/or the level that you are willing to participate so we can get the planning well underway before leaving for summer. Also, if you think there is anyone else that should have received this email, please forward!
Hope you all have a great 4-day week! And thanks so much for you time,
Alex
